Recently uploaded avatars now use the data uri scheme, old avatars unaffected. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_URI_scheme . So recently uploaded GIF avatars no longer cycle. Also see this post:
Will post this here since i don't think there's a point into making a new thread. Seems that when uploading an avatar now the original image is compressed to much and thus the image quality way to low, thus all new uploaded avatars since the update don't seem to look very good. Tried as an experiment uploading both png's and jpg's. But they all ended up converted to jpg with to much compression. The only exceptions seem to be avatars like the one i'm currently using that are heavy on transparency. Before the update you could have at least have had better results by using a 96x96 png image but now not even that works anymore.
So it seems like a change in the xenforo settings maybe? ALso maybe it could be reversed, animated GIF avatars are cool. Also detracts from quality of avatars it seems.
Have you looked at the "address" of your avatar? Uses data uri scheme now. it's something like this, but actually gets corrupted when I post.
Adresses are normal on browsers not based on Chrome. Not sure if recent but that may be part of a server stack optimisation (modspeed and related) affecting only future uploads rather than retroactively applied.
edit; well skip that skippy, seems existing avatars thumbnails got reconverted to very low quality jpegs (under 5kb for moniprofiles?).
There's a quote from Gravatar. It was a conscious choice not to accept animated images. On the whole most people don’t like them, and it can seriously detract from the look and feel of a site. Since we (all) are guests on peoples web pages we do our best to play nice with the other kids while we are there.

I so did not, I uploaded a gif man, I am 40 years old and most of them have been at computers. This whole problem anyway is because of asses like 4chan.
Maybe. But I think JPG has at least improved from what it was like earlier.
GIF images still suck; they don't cycle and are really low quality. Except if you go to members profile page.
