So a new generation looms and ATi branding is no more so we can't ask ourselves ATi or nVidia again but yet the question remains the same.
Red or Green?
Where do we stand, nVidia GeForce or AMD Radeon?
Or is there a third contender for the crown?
You guys know where I usually stand but I have to admit the Radeon HD7000 series is looking pretty nifty.
Both are shaping up to be absolute power houses so whichever way one goes power seems assured at least this time around.
June 16th is when AMD are going to officially announce the 390X, Fury or whatever.
About. ****ing. Time.
My hype is so deflated at this point, I'm honestly not expecting this card to wipe the floor. I really would like it to, but I get the feeling it won't.
Sad to see that AMD not only couldn't get their shit handled on the CPU front, but now their "Good Enough" philosophy have reached the GPU division too.
It does have the raw specs to beat the titan x so maybe it's not just talk
They could simplify the memory controller and use the space for performance libraries and use memory compression which isn't done on the existing 290x, use the more efficient GCN revision from tonga (I see no reason for them not to) and the power reduction on the memory allows more clock headroom, especially when you have watercooling to avoid throttling.
This really could outpace anything nvidia has, there's lots of sensible reasons for this to be the case
From what I understand the 295x2 is still getting monster numbers, but has some horrendous frame times. I'm keen to see what that high bandwidth does, if anything, to improve frame times.
There's also some delicious claims that the Fury X is around 54% more powerful than the 290X. That's pretty fucking baller if true.
With Fiji XT and Fiji PRO on the official release schedule, I'm kinda torn on what I'll go with, but I'm guessing the lower PRO and overclock it some. Depends on pricing really.
The 7970 may just be the longest lasting card to maintain the best price to performance ever made. It was released over 3 years ago and only now are cards double the performance, that's really sad.

I really wish I was more up on the videocard landscape when I bought my 760 on a whim. It's an okay card, but for equivalent price I could have bought an AMD that would have stomped it
In other news AMD are posting 8k screenshots on twitter for shits and giggles. Of course they are bmp and are like 100mb in size, but at least they are having fun.
They're gonna get better now they've ditched bulldozer and Fury is a stopgap.
40% more ipc in zen and 16nm on the GPU's will bring above 200% power efficiency according to their own numbers.
If Fury is faster than Titan X and cheaper than a 980ti then you'll be able to spot the fanboys who suddenly think the same performance that made them wet their knickers when nvidia had it weeks ago is suddenly not good enough to impress them when they downplay AMD.
Maybe it wont be, christ they're pricing the crappy 390x at 550 bloody Euros, that's 980ti pricing right there!
It's a 290x rebrand for the price of a card that's literally 50% faster than it.
Price over here seems to be about 450$ for 390x and 820-850$ for 980ti.
I dunno, it's all too rich for my blood anyway. If I had to buy a 390x, and if the 390x is genuinely nothing more than rebrand, I'd just go for a 290x.
NCIX has one for 370$ instead. (Canadian dollars)
Over on [H] some lad has been playing around with the 390X. Evidently you can flash your 290X to the new 390x bios. Pcb is virtually the same. It gets a n okay score in firestrike, but overall snap up those 290's. Or don't.
28nm can't die fast enough.
A card so bad they only show them to factual shills.
It seems like AMD are going to pull some dodgy graphs like always and then show some extremely unlikely situations where a 390x will bets nvidia due to DX12 and then just release the same shit at higher prices.
It's fury or bust. If fury is a crap card then it will be all over the chans in captioned pictures about doing what it says on the tin.
Unveiling is on the 16th.
The 390x is the 290x with a price hike, same card.
