Favorite SNES Emulator?

Has this been done? What's your favorite SNES Emulator? I've always used ZSNES over the others, seems to work the best on my athlon xp 2400+, radeon hd 4350, 2GB Ram Rig, a7n8x rig. but I've recently installed linux and heard good things about BSNES (higan now?). What's your guys' favorite according to compatibility and performance?

I currently use BSNES v073. It was the last version with the more user friendly GUI. My biggest gripe with newer versions (currently v094) is the insistence on using the library feature making multiple copies of my ROMs. The reason behind this was create the concept of game folders, meaning the ROM, the save file, the save states, and any screenshots for that ONE game are in one folder, and the emulator can run it from that folder. I'm all for it if doing it is OPTIONAL, which in its current form, its not. This makes testing a ROM hack on newer versions difficult when you're trying to ensure compatibility.

I like SNES9x, but there seems to be issues with some games I still play. Also, there is an issue with fullscreen that seems to cause some issues.

How old is it, and do you know what the processor it is? GPU isn't as vital for emulation as the CPU is.

No prob, but again, Zsnes' use baffles me when Snes9x is far superior, more accurate, fast, and more stable. A good test is run Earthworm Jim 2 on the two emulators; Zsnes doesn't use the audio streaming EWJ2 uses, and will have missing sound effects, Snes9x however, does and the game sounds perfect. Star Fox runs properly, and Square Enix games will sound perfect too ^_^ I want to make a thread comparing the two.

I don't know why, but the NTSC filter (or any filter for that matter) just urks me. I know its designed to make the games look like an old CRT TV, but the brighter pixelated colors look better in my opinion. As for SNES9x, I notice that it has issues playing Donkey Kong Country, which my wife loves to play all the time, but not so much on ol' 073 bsnes.

What issues are you referring to if I may ask? Are you using the most recent build of Snes9x and not 1.53 vanilla?

Hmmm...the test build site is currently down, I can give you a link if need be.

I have the latest testbuild and the intro and menu screens to DKC aren't emulated properly. The old school red tower that Cranky Kong is on playing the record player isn't there. Also Cranky and the record player show up in the menu when selecting a file.

The deuce? That's weird. I mean, given how many games there are, Snes9x isn't perfect, but, sure is better than that excrescence that is Zsnes. How are they not emulated properly? Do you at least use Higan/Bsnes in RetroArch by chance? Odd...let me check this out...

Edit: I see them just fine, using the same test build, I believe the last one was in like, June or August, I think. Maybe your DKC ROM is corrupted? Or the some layers are disabled in the settings somehow....? But I'm looking at the game intro and I don't see any missing red tower.

Would it help for me to record a video of it loading up...? Reset all the settings in the emulator and try again? I don't know how I see the game properly but you see missing objects, sounds like layers got disabled somehow.

Which, again, I don't have those issues on my end at all. Methinks a bad ROM dump or messed up settings in Snes9x 1.53 test build. I don't know why you have those issues, but it's ain't the emulator's fault. I've played DKC on Snes9x 1.52 and 1.53 for what, three years, and never encountered that issue. Delete the config file, failing that, a bad ROM dump. Snes9x is only 2nd in accuracy.

Try resetting the emulator settings, or finding out if it's version 1.0 or 1.1 of the ROM. If it still doesn't work, I don't know, as again, it works perfectly on my end. Sounds like messed up settings somehow. Verify the ROM dump, make sure it's clean and doesn't have any anomalies. If it does, don't know what to tell you man. I tried to tell ya all I could; reset the emulator settings by deleting the config or use 1.53 vanilla to see if it still persists. If it works on my end, that proves the emulator isn't at fault. I don't know how else I can prove that Snes9x isn't at fault.

Video test:

I just...don't know what else I can say, or do, to help you with this issue. Snes9x is not at fault, it sounds like a bad ROM dump. *sigh* I just don't know.

I figured out what it is, and I KNOW you're going to not be suprised. It's snespurify, the utility that comes with the old bsnes that corrupts the ROM when converting it from .smc to .sfc. I tried out clean .smc files both with v1.0 and v1.1 and they work fine in both bsnes AND snes9x. But once converted to .sfc, v1.1 works fine in bsnes, but v1.0 will crash when you have the BARRAL code (my wife NEEDS THAT lol) and Donkey or Diddy take a hit from an enemy causing the other to start to come in. While that issue does not happen in snes9x, it DOES have the issue with the intro on all version of DKC.

So this leaves me with an interesting dilema. ALL of my SNES rom files were converted to .sfc because I was trying to comply and successfully test out the new releases of bsnes, even though I just liked v073's GUI better each time. Now you may not need to do that any longer, but the current Higan library system just straight up urks me because it creates a duplicate file system meaning that you now have a COPY of your game file, which wastes space. And, of course, byuu's response is that in todays computing world we shouldn't have to worry about that. Ugh. It's still a waste of space.

Now I like SNES9x. I'm hoping the next release is an official stable one that fixes the bugs still present in 1.53. Now the next thing to find is a front end that is easy to setup and doesn't mess with how my files are currently setup with my games and save files. Also it looks like I will be going back and UNCONVERTING my ROMS to .smc with a BIG middle finger to snespurify.

EDIT- It was definately the test build I had was not the official one (which I thought it was). The version I was using even had bugs in Super Mario World. Since the testbuild site is down, I downloaded (reluctantly) from EmuCR the latest testbuild and everything runs smooth, even the BARRAL code and Super Mario World. This is the problem with the internet right now, IMO. We have too many sites that have outdated or bad builds of software being distributed. Looks like I will be switching to using SNES9x.
