Resident Evil 4 PC, a crappy conversion of a very good game.

Yeah folks, this game has just been released.
And the bad news is that it's very crappy. No, I don't mean that Resident Evil 4 is a bad game or anything, since we all know that it's a classic game. But the Pc conversion is very bad, and I mean very, very bad.

To start, there is no graphic setting in this game. This means that you don't have any control over graphic option; the only thing that you can choose is screen resolution. But that's not the main problem, the main problem is that the game looks so ugly due to its lacking of many graphic features (volumetric fog, lightmap, and dynamic lighting). This may not be a big problem in the daytime, but at night, it looks so ugly.

Here are some comparison shots among the Gc, Ps2 and Pc versions. I took these shots from gamefaqs forum. Thank neojam for posting them.

Below are my shots. They were taken @1280*800 (widescreen).

Oops... I forgot to mention that all (almost all) cutscenes in the game are prerendered clips -FYI, Gc version uses real in-game render, but Ps2 version uses prerendered clips-. It seems to me that the Pc version is just the (bad) conversion of the Ps2 one.
Actually, I don't have any problem with prerendered vdo as long as it looks OK, but the videos in this game look horrible (I think the quality is even lower than mpeg1 format).

If you've already had the Gc or Ps2 version, just ignore this Pc installment, since it's not as good as its console counterpart in any way.

Just like DMC 3. Capcom, how did you let this happen AGAIN? Won't buy it, definately.

I think we Us Resident Evil fans that had hopes for the PC version, should file a complaint via email, letter or if they have a forum complain on that, to express our disappointment let them know that we are unhappy on such a sh!tty port and won't buy the PC version.

There is no reason with as much time as they had with delaying it so much, that they couldn't at least make a direct port of the good looking Gamecube version, or a direct port of the Gamecube version, with the added PS2 extras.

They had plenty of time to work on this to make sure it looked good and was on par with the Gamecube version, but they failed us. They gave us a version that looks even crappier than the PS2 version in many ways.

The idiotic thing is, that the PC is capable of much better graphics than the PS2 or Gamecube alone or combined, hell my FX 5200 can spit out better graphics on low resolution (Although a bit slow), than that garbage disgrace of a Resident Evil 4 port.

Why oh why does Capcom leave the Job of porting their games to lazy, small time, unprofessional companies, and disappoint us with such terrible ports?

Why oh Why doesn't Capcom port it themselves instead of letting other companies do it that have no idea what to do or how to do it, or port it properly.

At least the the Silent Hill games are ported properly to PC, or at least a hell of a lot better than Resident Evil 4 or any of the Resident Evil games.

Oh well I still have a gamecube and my Gamecube version of Resident Evil 4. I'd like playing that more, even if it doesn't have all the extras the PS2 version has, than to be A$$ed to play the crappy looking PC port of the
game.

Heres what I have to say, "Fuk you Capcom for leaving a professionals job in the hands of small time, unprofessional and inexperienced low-life companies for giving us such a Sh!tty A$$ port for the PC. The port could of been so much better if you had done it yourselves".

Oh my god this is worse than I had imagined. In fact, apart from the character models it doesn't look any better than an average PS1 port oO

im play it now, its not tat bad guys...
u do need a gamepad though...to have fun wit it.

Im sure there will be mods to add lighting and stuff

apparently the ubisoft US release will have mouse support

Here's some guide for adding mouse as joystick, it's in chinese, but the pictures pretty much talk for themselves.

Is there some screenshot of the USA PC version.

The version out in asia might of been released and not completed properly. Some of us are thinking that the UBISoft USA release might look a lot better than the asian release, and that's why the release dates are so far apart, with the USA version not retailing in stores until April 2nd 2007.

Also according from what I read on a gaming website, they had previewed the PC version and had said it looked comparable to the Gamecube Version or better, and it really added to the experience with being able to up the resolution and graphics quality.

I'm still standing by that this is either an incomplete version, leaked version, or fake.

A Box Shot means Diddly Crap, as there are already official Boxshots on the net of the USA version well before the US version is to be Released (The Boxshot looks exactly like the art on the Gamecube Versions Case), not to mention Boxshots can be faked as well as anything else.

Unless someone from the country it was supposedly released, can confirm that it is an officially released version available in stores and have seen it themselves in person, and not some leaked torrent version or fake, I have reason to believe otherwise.

Especially since I haven't heard news of an official release yet, even announcements of one by searching google.

Does anyone have any Legit links to anything announcing the official (Asian) release of this game for the PC in english language?

I am forced to believe otherwise unless I see hard proof, and not some supposed leaked version or screenshots posted on a forum.

I need a link to the publishers, and or Capcom's website announcing that the PC version has been released officially in Asia.

However if the game does look that horrible and it is the final version, I don't think the $29.99 I was going to waste on this would be worth it, and I'll stick with my Gamecube version and buy something else that is worth buying.;)

well id love to know what they are doing, capcom have admitted their western world sales completely suck at the moment, if they are releasing stuff like this im not suprised.

maybe they just arent in a rush to release it over in the US or Europe, they might see how it sells in asia first then if it does well, release it here.

Maybe the Chinese version has CrappyGrafX as copy-protection system ^^'
I'll wait for the US/EU release to see if it was worth waiting or not :I

About the release date of the game, this game has just been officially released by EA Taiwan.

Even though the US version will be released (by UBI) in April, I don't think there's gonna be any significant change in the game. DMC3 and ONI3 are the best example, UBI release it later but there is no change in the game itself.

Anyway, here are some more shots.

The engine really looks like HL1 with hi-res textures... :s

Well, I may get some spite here but I don't like RE4. It turned into a shooter and lost the "survival horror" style it had till RE3. And with such graphics for PC, I'd rather don't even care about this game. I'm worried with Capcom: they seem to simple don't care about PC gamers. The same to UBISoft. It's just sad, they're losing a good number of fans around the world.

Dude, just play the game, don't fool yourself into thinking this game is a true FPS like UT or HL. You will be amazed as how good this game after you get past the "This is a fps style" game dissapear.

I just posted over at Capcom's Official Community Forum at:

Resident Evil 4 (PC) Questions - Capcom BBS

Where I Posted a question about the poor quality of the PC Port, using a bit of criticism and described how this is disappointing their loyal fans.

Some of you may not care about the Piss Poor quality of this port and may be OK playing it, but not me. I need all the eye-popping visuals that the gamecube offered, and I refuse to pay for and waste my money on something even more inferiror than the PS2 version.

They had more than enough time with the delays to make sure it looked visually appealing and offered the same eye candy as the gamecube version. There is no excuse for this laziness.

It seems that They took a great looking game and turned it into something ugly as hell of the about the same quality As an enhanced PS1 game, somewhat under the PS2 visuals of the game.

I was looking to play a good looking port with the extras of the PS2 version, but I definitely will not buy it now. It will ruin and kill the experience I had with the Gamecube version and mutilate it.

The PC port looks like Sh!tty Puke:spy:

Sorry I'm very critical of this, but I expected much more making it worth the all the wait and the delays, however I am quite disappointed in such a poor port. I'll just stick with the Gamecube version, although I'll miss out on Assignment Ada, or the Plaga gun:(

I'm holding on to hope that when it comes out in America, it'll be fixed patched or whatever and have the Full Fledged eye popping Visuals and retain the experience it was meant to have.

Why Capcom, Why have you let us PC Gamers down, and butchered such a great game!? Have you no love or respect for your PC gaming fans:cry:

Thats not a game, thats a visual abomination of he highest magnitude...even 3D hentai companies offer better looking garbage than that. Some may say I've just been spoilt by Oblivion / Half Life 2 etc....well for cold hard cash I want to be spoilt...this can go sit on a shelf feeling loney, I'm gonna cuddle my PS2 version..it's not as lusty as the GC version, but it has more kinky fetishes...erm features :p

Sorry, it's just I was looking towards a great port of a great game, and instead we get a poor port of a great game.

I was hoping to see visuals as good as the gamecube or better, according to an article on a gaming website that previewed the PC version and claimed it looked equally as good as the gamecube version or better.

I am just disappointed that us who were looking to get it for the PC, and expected at least gamecube graphics/visuals, were severely let down and disgrace.

I am just expressing my disgust in such an awful port as any normal person would do if a game was poorly ported, especially when they had plenty of time with the delays to make sure everything was perfect and looked good.

I'm sorry if I seemed a little upset there, well actually I am as I expected much much more;)

I'm hoping that there's screenshots of the game running on a decent or modern rig though so I can make a fair comparison.

Maybe if you mess with gamma, contrast and brightness a bit it'll look a bit darker. It sure seems to have lost most of its atmosphere in the porting...

Xtreme2damax, I know how you feel.
But you know what ? Everything is money matter.

The fact is that in Japan the console-based gamer and pc-based gamer are clearly separate. And the important thing is that pc-based gamer is not a large group of people. The logic is that even Capcom put their time and effort porting Re4 into Pc with an excellent quality, the game still doesn't sell much (in Japan). Adding to the fact that the game has been released for Gc and Ps2 for quite some time, there is no sound reason for Capcom to port it nicely.

You may ask what about US gamers, since PC-based gamers in the US (and other countries on the west) are a lot larger, compared to the Japanese one.
Well, let me ask you a question, has Capcom ever given a damn for gamers living elsewhere besides Japan ? I don't think so.

This is the reason why they let Softnext (I'm not sure if I get the name right) port it. Actually, they should know how bad it is since Oni3: in the very first stage, you can see that there is something wrong with FOG (there is NO background fog in this game). If I were capcom, I would let somebody else do it. But no... It didn't happen, so we saw a crappy port again in DMC3, and this time it's worse. At first, I thought that Capcom would treat RE4 differently because it's a great game (many say that it's a great game of all time). Well... When I saw the result, I have to say that I was wrong.

Maybe if you mess with gamma, contrast and brightness a bit it'll look a bit darker. It sure seems to have lost most of its atmosphere in the porting...
Ohh friend, let me tell you that all shots here have already been photoshopped, because the original pictures were so dark, I have to add gamma and contrast to the picture. When I say "dark", I mean the low contrast, washed-out, and dull image, so the word "dark" here is not the same "dask" as you can find in console version.

In short, the real thing that I see while playing game is much worse. I know I could use the display properties to adjust the bri/con, but it doesn't help much.

-----------------
EDIT:
Here are some example of original images (without any bri/con adjustment).

They don't look good, do they ?

Well, maybe they'll add the missing graphic features in a patch... dunno... lemme hope, ok? ^^'

Haha, I know these screenshots!

Now, now you can all calm down and listen to the logical explenation behind these pictures.
In a way this is RE4 alright...but not the official version.

This is a project by Kuro_Doragon, who started recreating the gamecube version all by himself instead of with an entire team.
It was up on some forum a while ago , but I have no idea what the link was or I'll link you the proof.

Indeed, they only showed the screenshots of the game, and not the pictures of work on the engine or the crazy pictures of the developer himself as posted on previously-mentioned forum.

So, conclusion: This is RE4 for pc , which got abbandoned quite some time ago. That's why you won't see any screenshots of Salazar or Sadler for example.
For the high graphics version , made by a big-budget company: check out Ubisoft's pages. Cool

im not sure why, but it seems that the graphics are even worse than the PS2 version?

on second thought, why not just pick up a PS2 now if you haven't got one already. its cheap, and has a ton of good games...

#24 ·
To be fair, Capcom knew they won't make much money from this game so why spend the extra effort. The game isn't out in the western world yet, but everyone seem to have gotten it. Another forum I read reported there were over 40,000 leechers at the first day of "release". :eyemove:

FYI, the game uses a serial key system, so no need for inserting the cd to play. It uses the gamecube version apparently, so there won't be extras found in the PS2 version. The graphics aren't that bad. You'd need to see it in action, but keep in mind this game was design to run on very little end specs.

Capcom released a game that won't make money. They probably spent very little resource on it, so having a stable and efficient end product is commendable.

#25 ·
C'mon, they only needed to port the code, not redo all of the artistic part. They had a whole year to insert some pixel shader effects, for a team it shouldn't be that long/hard to do...

#26 ·

Umm... I'm not sure about this since I haven't finished the game yet, but when I took a peek at the video folder, I saw video files of Another Order, the Ps2 exclusive mission. Plus, the review here said that the Pc version has all of the Ps2 extras.
