looking for video editing software

Hi guys, I need a little bit of recommendation on video editing software.

In my previous pc's I've always had a tv card that I'd sometimes use to capture video from external devices (consoles) via s-video and/or composite. Back in the day I'd use software like DScaler, VirtualDub and Windows Movie Maker.

Because I still like to record/edit video from time to time (but don't really want a card like that in my pc anymore and I didn't want to go all out with a HDMI capture device yet) I went for an "ezcap", which is a small USB device that can capture analog sources just like the TV cards I used to have.

The thing works well, and comes with software called ArcSoft ShowBiz which does the basic job of capturing the actual video quite well, but the software is somewhat limited in editing functionality. Together with MovieMaker (the one included in Windows Live Essentials, I tried the old MovieMaker 2.6 but it crashes a lot on Win8) I can produce decent results but it's not the ideal solution; one of the issues I'm facing right now is that I lose a bit of quality between converting between ShowBiz's output and a format compatible with MovieMaker (could be codec-related, so info on appropriate codecs to use is always helpful too. :) )

I'm curious to what alternatives there are to MovieMaker and ShowBiz. I'm not looking for professional grade stuff (e.g. Adobe Premiere) but I don't mind paying for it it's good (I'm thinking something between free and $100 tops). Preferrably it's an all-in-one solution that can take care of capturing as well as editing.

Oh, I wasn't really aware there was a "lite" version of Premiere. I see there is a bundle with Photoshop Elements too.

Some searching around and there are plenty of competitors... Pinnacle Studio, Corel VideoStudio (former Ulead), Sony Movie Studio, Cyberlink PowerDirector

...warnings which one of those I should absolutely NOT pick are welcome too ;-)

Not sure if I can help, as I've always stuck by FCP and Premiere for work. However if you need a powerful NLE for free, perhaps you can try Lightworks. It seems fairly complicated though.

One popular choice is "HitFilm Express." It offers a range of editing features and includes both capturing and editing capabilities. It's free to use and packs quite a punch for those who want more than basic editing. Another one worth checking out is "DaVinci Resolve." While it's known for its professional-grade features, the free version still offers robust editing tools that can handle capturing and editing without breaking the bank. And just a quick tip: if you ever need to convert your videos between formats, you can easily use a mov to mp4 converter online. It can come in handy for seamless editing.
