Early impressions:
  • Clean installation was quite fast.
  • Windows sync from cloud worked at retrieving all login and individual settings stuff from my Windows 8.1 account.
  • Glorious return of Start menu, with that Live Tiles hybrid thingy (best of both worlds, ain't it?)
  • Search box which kinda works like OSX's more recent Spotlight web-inclusive search.
  • Task View which works like a poor man's version of OSX's Expose/Mission Control.
  • Modern Apps run in windows and are resizable.
  • Explorer's Home shows favourite, recently accessed folders and documents. Explorer's interface is very clean (perhaps too clean?).
  • OneDrive sync from cloud worked, kinda gives Dropbox a run for its money now.
  • The frickin window borders are 1 pixel wide. HUZZAH!
  • Was gonna say Windows Store didn't work, but it connected now. So downloading all my Modern Apps.
  • IE11 is not as shitty. So stop it with the IE is slow jokes.
  • Overall, it feels very snappy. I really like it.
What's not working:
  • Yiynova driver didn't work. :(
  • Tried to install 3dsMax 2015, but the installer failed because it couldn't connect to the Internet. Will try again later, because the Windows Store also failed earlier on. Worked.
What to take note of:
  • There are already reports that Microsoft IS LOGGING EVERYTHING YOU DO in the Technical Preview. So don't be stupid like accessing sensitive materials such as banking, buying stuff from Amazon or browinsing for MLP porn.
  • Gonna try Steam and some smaller games later.

Redstone: The codename for the next Windows update coming in 2016

Microsoft loves to use codenames and from the past few years, there are two in particular that you may recall; Blue and Threshold. With Windows 10 (Threshold) coming to market sometime this summer, Microsoft is already starting to work on the next update for the OS.

Microsoft has said multiple times that Windows will be moving at a faster cadence than in the past and they are already working on a release for 2016. The codename for the project is 'Redstone', a popular item in the recently acquired game, Minecraft.

At this time, not much is known about Microsoft's plans for Windows vNext, but the company has now entered the planning stages of the update, as confirmed by two internal sources. This shouldn't come as a big surprise as the company is perpetually planning for the next iteration of its software, regardless of the platform.

We will be curious to see if any more codenames pop up using the Minecraft terminology. We have already seen several names from the Halo series spring to life, like the Spartan web browser and of course, Cortana too.

It would seem logical that this will not be a large update for the OS. Seeing that Windows 10 is an overhaul of the entire platform, Redstone will likely be relatively minor in comparison. Until Microsoft clarifies what the post-Windows 10 world looks like for the platform, there are many questions left to be answered.

It is worth pointing out too that Windows Server is expected to be released in 2016, so Redstone could possibly be related to this project as well. It's early days for the this project but as we learn more and solidify what Redstone will become, we will keep you updated.

For now, know that Redstone is the next codename for Windows update and if you happen to see it pop up anywhere at Microsoft, make sure to let us know.

bwah,ha,ha - win10 is useless and i'm laughing all the way to the bank while i withdraw $129 to snag win7 OEM while i still can [only as a 2nd new games only pc, be stuffed if i'd even use that as my main OS]

they still haven't fixed the windows theme color issues that affect and even OVERRULE firefox's color themes [and all other browsers] causing images to not display on some pages, this issue had a forum of complaints somewhere back when win8 came out, so unless u like default white window backgrounds u r screwed.

doubt they fix the 3rd party controller calibration bug either, win10 is a free upgrade for me i won't even bother using, along with the $45 early-offer-down-the-drain i spent on win8, pretty sad when they can't even GIVE it away.

thats not a bug, you are just using a bad ICC profile.

nothing to do with ICC at all, is just changing a high contrast themes colors makes all web pages that color, this may be by design but it's not desirable for many people, custom windows themes did not effect web pages prior to win8 as they had an editable classic theme, now can only edit high contrast themes.

There is more about Windows 10 than what we get from the media and i think Microsoft is sneaking quite well since the media only Focus on other companies. They recently talked about Rasperi Pi Support as well as the Rom Version coming for Android devices. Then we have the XB1 and WPhones getting it as well and finally PC/Tablets getting free upgrade of Windows 10 as well. Doesn't that smell fishy??? it's by all means a great move but it also means Windows 10 is going to be in a wide amount of devices and that's awesome. They are building a eco-System that may hit hard the competition if they get the plan through.

From a developer standpoint we have universal apps now which is glorious and at the same time means that 1 app can be compatible with all devices. That's awesome and i think something the competition isn't realizing. They are offering the best development Tools in my humble opinion for free which is Visual Studio as well as providing great Services, Xbox live is coming to PC and to complete the Combo they may release the better DX this year as well as allowing Streaming to all devices. I may be totally wrong here but i believe when the right Moment Comes the competition will get hit hard, very hard.

Cloud people generally are. Unlike folks focused on the production and sales of packaged products, their career's goal is to ensure continued, lasting satisfaction, maximize adoption and minimize rejection of their vision.

Under Ballmer, Microsoft's entire game plan with undecided folks was making discounts and buying off entreprise deciders. Windows 8 and the online-only Xbone plans made it clear MS' ability for coercion doesn't work anymore, and people will have freedom on other platforms if they won't anymore in Microsoft's ecosystem.

The ability to create universal apps that will run in a huge amount of devices(Win8.1 Version of the @ruanTuberHD is a universal app), Objective-C and Java code that compiles in VS2015 for easy port, Hololens that makes a huge Screen and run apps around you and the ability to stream content/games from all devices running Windows 10 from Smartphones to tablets and even consoles is way beyond awesomeness.... is greatness at it's best and better than sex. That's official now XD

Android task switcher. mmm, innovative?

That Feature is part of Microsoft Continuum which in my opinion as a developer is part of Microsoft "Jaque Mate" strategy. Unlike others Microsoft is unifying all plattforms into one awesome eco-system and from a developer standpoint this is a big win and could potentially end iOS and Android dominance.

I did some tests on Universal apps over a year ago and is incredible how you can share the exact same code across plattforms and most specially using MVVM which may be the reason why C# or .Net as a whole is getting more Attention as well as optimizations and Speed. Having a proper MVVM based universal application only requires different UI layers when needed but by design XAML based UI is dynamic enough to adjust itself to different Scenarios and sizes or the developer can simply apply different styles or templates on the fly to perfectly fit the target device. This is simply awesome and something i'm looking Forward to see in upcoming apps and the System as a whole.

Here is a Video about the Continuum Feature:

if they can create something like Apple's handoff feature but cross platform, that'd be great.

Apple's handoff is more of an active account syncronization. Windows have a Basic implementation already as calender, Messages and other Infos are shared across devices as well. The only difference is that Apple's handoff has a task on the System to actively open and share Information. Such a Feature can be written in a background app.

All store apps share Information between each other so basically all required is a Background Task that syncronize Information over your account. At least for a small dev like me is not a Feature that would take Long to write so i guess MS could potentially add it or probably someone else.

The only thing i still don't like at all is the horrible interface for phones and tablets....
Well, some People like it and others don't but look at it as Android Default Interface. Have you ever seen it??? it's terribly ugly in my opinion. The only reason why you get a nice UI on Android is because most companies create there own Interface or use pre-made ones. I don't see a reason why the same shouldn't happen to Windows in the future. The difference here is that Windows devices aren't as wide spread as Android ones so there was no Need till now. However, from the look of things it could drastically Change in the future.

My only concern is that the UI is heavily tied to the System but that hasn't been a reason to stop Windows customizations in the past only the time will tell. A launcher could help tho.
