You have to be careful where you download software... Sometimes, a legitimate program will be repackaged with an infected installer. It will install the program, but it will install something bad as well.
It's because of things like this that I've taken as many steps as I have to ensure my downloads are safe... I control the domain, the website, and I scan the links to the ZIP files right after I upload them with VirusTotal before I make them public. It's easy to lie and say something is safe. I always check when I need to download something that can no longer be obtained from the original source. VirusTotal makes that easy because it will tell you when the file was first scanned. If it's from 2009 and there's zero hits, you can be sure the file is safe. Not advertising my work, here, just stating fact. Some sites, that's all they do. Every single download will have an infected installer.
For these reasons, it helps to have some knowledge of virtualization and sandboxing. If you're not sure about a program or installer, you can run it in an environment where it can do no harm.
