I doubled the amount of ram in my Thinkpad from 4gb to 8gb and thinking of slapping in a msata based ssd. mSATA ssds work just fine in the T420. If i really wanted I could have a total of 3 drives since I can replace the optical drive with a hdd caddy and stick in a msata ssd into the unused wan slot on the motherboard. My i5 2520m easily heats to 95+ degrees so a quad core i7 would just be throttled like crazy for me and the dualcore i5 works perfectly fine while my issue is the nvs 4200m which is basically a 520m on the geforce side of things. Its a great laptop for the $300 I paid for it($220 for laptop and $70 for a replacement battery) Beats out any brand new Laptop in the price point since those would be using an atom based celeron.

My next laptop will certainly be something more gaming related like this for example

Yeah it's only good for 720p and even then it struggles to reach 60fps,
I use HiAlgoSWITCH for directx7-9 games to cut the resolution in half and double frame rates,
I'm looking into hacking the gpu / monitor .inf so it can output 1080p then scale back to 540p with
HiAlgoSWITCH instead of 450p so it looks less pixelated.

I personally just run mid 2000 and older games on mine. I have the desktop with an i5 3570k@4.2ghz 16gb of 1866mhz ddr3 ram a 970 and a 256gb samsung evo 850 ssd along with a 1tb hdd if I want to play anything newer at max settings at 1080p@60. Laptop was a godsend on vacation tho since it kept my sane while in hotel rooms for a week. Able to game for an hour before passing out for the night just to wake up at 4-6am to be on my feet until about 6-7pm before having dinner until 8-9pm and then heading back to the hotel just to pass out at 10pm to do it all over again. We drove to Orlando Florida for Universal Studios and Seaworld before heading down to Key West for a couple of days then drove back up to Michigan. So yeah laptop was a GODSEND for both the ride down and the ride back and while in the hotels. And before this I got it because we rented a 250squarefoot cinder block house from like the 60s for 6 months while we ripped out the old trailer we were living in for a modular house and I only had $300 to spend on a laptop and I needed something that would handle gaming which this does a much better job at than anything brand new at the $300 price point. Now that we are done with moving I can take the time and get the $1k i need for a much better gaming based laptop.

Managed to hack the .inf using this
    https://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU
to output 1080p 60Hz, it's rending outside the screen though even when scaled to 50% with HiAlgoSWITCH, so i'm not entirly sure how HiAlgoSWITCH works, I read somewhere that it just puts it into interlaced mode instead,
I tried adding these 50/60Hz both interlaced and progressive
    1920x1080i/p 50Hz only
    1200x675
    960x540
    800x450
    640x360
but they all gave me wierd results think I got the timings wrong.
1080p 60Hz also unlocked another resolution option too 1680x1050.
You have to hack the .inf in discrete / optimus off mode first do the restart.exe reboot into bios and change back to optimus, games will then give you the extra resolutions when ran with the nvidia gpu, it doesn't work to hack the intel gpu.

Finally it looks like Kaby Lake is finally better then broadwell

    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=2906&cmp[]=2586&cmp[]=2533

Skylake was such a downgrade from the older broadwell. So yeah I can see myself snagging a new i7 7700hq paired with a 1050 ti for roughly $1k to replace my Thinkpad T420.

Now if I see a 7700hq and 1060 with a 1080p IPS panel going for $1100 or less thats what I am going to snatch up as the 1060 should be perfect for 1080p going forward a number of years.

I was waiting on Benchmarks for the 7700hq to decide on what sort of Laptop I wanted to replace my T420 and now that we have them I am glad to see something best Broadwell finally. I was expecting Kaby lake to fall either short of haswell or inbetween haswell/broadwell to be hones but I am glad to see it beats haswell finally.

If i fell shoty og haswell like Skylake does then I would be looking at a haswell/broadwell CPU paired with at least a 970m but now that kaby lake beats broadwell I can get a 7700hq paired with at least a 1050 ti and be set as the 7700h1 is on par with my i5 3570k at stock speeds but with my 4.2ghz oc I get slightly more then 2300 STP which is nice but 2k on the 7700hq should be plenty for my needs tho.
